Being one of the biggest sites always comes with a heavy price for people trying to take advantage of you through various channels. In one of the most recent reports, Facebook has won several lawsuits against typosquatters. Typosquatters are basically people having domain names that are very very very similar to your website url, then trying to making a profit of them (similar to Cybersquatting).
TechCrunch reported that Facebook is one of the rare companies to ever win these typosquatter lawsuits and also claim liability damages under the U.S. Anti-Cybersquatter Consumer Protection Act. The huge social network giant will be receiving a payout of around $2.8 million dollars after the cases were won. Facebook has also received ownership of over 100 domains. Here are some examples of websites that were sued.
dacebook.com, zh-facebook.com, faceboocklogin.com, gfacebook.com, facebooll.com, facebookfreezer.com, facegbook.com, and faacebok.com
*these sites are now all re-directed back to facebook.com
One of the biggest typesquatters that were hit was Newgate which registered around 50 domains.
Defendants ruled guilty in this case have to each pay a different sum of damage. This is calculated by the number of domains owned and how they were used with other factors taken into consideration as well. But reports have it that damages for each defendant could be from $5,000 to $1.34 million dollars. A hefty amount for a typosquatter.
