.it registrars, requirements and history
Introduced in 1987, the domain name “.it” is actually an Internet country code top-level domain (or ccTLD) for the country of Italy. However, because of its additional meaning as the American English word “it”, “.it” is more familiar as a tool for constructing domain hacks for US based companies. Despite this, it is still very popular in Europe and the true use is to mark domain names that refer to a site specifically in the country of Italy. For example, the official government domain for Italy is .gov.it. This domain name can also be used for domains from specific Italian provinces if the website creator so chooses.
However, the use of the .it domain name is not free for all. Sponsored by IIT-CNR , there are certain registration restrictions that desired users must be sure they have met before they can apply for and are granted use of “.it” as a domain name.
First, since the intended use for the domain name “.it” was for domain names associated and connected with Italy, any English speaking country who wished to use it must notify the sponsor and pay a use fee. Applications for use have to be sent in Italian, either by fax or by regular mail to the registrar for use.
Second, for more private European countries, the registered agent of the website and the website or domain name owner must be a resident of a European nation preferably Italy. The application process is the same, requiring a faxed or mailed letter in Italian stating the desired domain name and requesting permission for use.
