.es registrars, requirements and history
.es is the top level domain for Spain. It was first introduced in 1988. However, few domain names were registered until the late 1990s, when internet use started to become more widespread. Red.es is the entity responsible for the administration of the .es TLD. It is an entity of the government of Spain, operating under the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. Besides domain administration, Red.es is responsible for the promotion of information technology in Spain.
Until 2005, registration rules for .es domains were quite cumbersome. Domains could only reflect the name of a person in Spain, the exact legal name of a business or a trade mark that is valid in Spain. This has led many businesses in Spain to use the generic .com TLD instead. These restrictions were dropped in 2005, allowing any domain to be registered at the second level. There are a few rules which remain for third level registrations. The .com.es, .nom.es and .org.es second level domains are open to anyone, however .gob.es and .edu.es are reserved for the use of government and educational entities in Spain.
While the .es TLD was intended to be used by entities connected to Spain, the current rules now allow anyone to register a domain under this TLD without having to show any connection to Spain. Numerous domains have been registered under .es for the purpose of domain hacks. For example, itun.es is used as an iTunes Ping URL shortener and beach.es is owned by a company selling vacation packages.
