.ch registrars, requirements and history
.ch is the top level domain for Switzerland. It was first introduced in 1987 and has since become very popular with entities associated with Switzerland. The .ch domain is the abbreviation of Confederatio Helvetica, which is Switzerland's Latin name. As there are four different languages used in Switzerland, using Latin for the abbreviation was seen as a more “neutral” choice.
.ch domains are administered by an independent foundation called SWITCH. It is responsible for the registration, administration and dispute resolution of all .ch domains. It is possible to register a domain directly with SWITCH or through one of their authorized partners. Many third party domain registrars, especially those that do business in Europe, allow the registration of .ch domains.
Unlike with some other country code top level domains, there is no requirement that registrants be present in Switzerland. Therefore, individuals, companies and organizations can register a .ch domain without regard to citizenship, location or connection to Switzerland. However, the majority of entities that register a .ch domain are connected with Switzerland in a certain way, such as companies that are based in Switzerland or who provide services to Swiss residents.
The only restriction is that domain names registered under the Swiss TLD be a minimum of three letters long. Only Swiss cantons and the Federal Chancellery of Switzerland may use two letter domain names. Although SWITCH may create exceptions to this rule, in practice only one exception has been given so far, to the Expo.02 national exposition, which had the expo.02.ch domain name.
